Instructions for Use

Following a knee injury or surgery, the knee and leg need to regain normal range of motion so that they can be properly extended or straightened during routine activities like walking.  Knee Extend helps restore full range of motion and flexibility of the knee and leg through a weight system that assists in a gradual and controlled extension of the knee.  Knee Extend is portable, easy to use and can be utilized as part of a physical therapy regime or an at home rehabilitation program.

Before using Knee Extend, you should consultant with your doctor, physical therapist or other healthcare professional regarding the use of the Knee Extend, including the amount of weight you should use, how quickly you should increase the weight, the length of time you should use Knee Extend, and how often you should use it.

There are risks to using Knee Extend, including pain, discomfort, swelling, discoloration or bruising, tingling, skin irritation, numbness, spasms, stiffness and difficulty moving your knee or leg.  If you experience any of these problems or other complications, discontinue use of Knee Extend and consult your doctor, physical therapist or other healthcare provider.

Before using Knee Extend, carefully read the following user instructions

User Instructions:

Knee Extend should be used in a seated position with the leg outstretched and the foot supported on a foot rest such as an ottoman or chair. There should be enough room for Knee Extend to hang freely from the leg once it is properly positioned on the leg.

Step 1–Empty the Therapeutic Weight Case (TWC)

Remove the adjustable weight straps, comfort flex cushion and weights from the TWC.  Zip closed the TWC.

Step 2–Place the TWC on the leg

Extend the straps to ensure sufficient room for the TWC to hang freely from the leg and to allow the comfort flex cushion to be placed on top of the TWC.

Place the adjustable straps comfortably on the leg above and below the knee. This can be done by connecting the adjustable weight straps to one side of the TWC using the clips and then wrapping the straps over the leg and attaching the clips to the other side of the TWC.

If tolerated, the TWC can also be placed on the leg by using the clips to connect the straps to both sides of the TWC, creating a loop that will allow the TWC to be slipped onto the leg.  This can be done by placing the foot through the loop and sliding the TWC up the leg and positioning the straps comfortably above and below the knee.

Be careful not to position the straps on areas of the leg that are swollen or painful. If placing the TWC on the leg causes excessive discomfort, remove the TWC and consult with your healthcare professional.

Step 3–Position the comfort flex cushion to support the knee

Place the comfort flex cushion on the top of the TWC and then cinch the adjustable weight straps raising the TWC and flex cushion up until the cushion is comfortably supporting the back of the knee.  Be sure that the straps are not too tight or applying excessive pressure on the knee or leg.

Step 4–Passive Extension: Use 2 pound weights to gradually assist in extending the knee and leg.
Place one of the 2 pound weights into one of the weight pockets located on the side of the TWC.

Allow the TWC to hang from the leg with the 2 pound weight as tolerated.  The leg muscles should be relaxed letting gravity do the work.   Adjust the straps if necessary to be sure the back of the knee is supported by the comfort flex cushion.  This passive extension should be performed only as tolerated. The first attempt at passive extension may only last a few minutes before it is no longer comfortable or tolerable and the weights and TWC need to be removed from the leg.

As the knee improves and strengthens, the time for passive extension can be gradually increased.  Additional 2 pound weights can also be added as tolerated.  Weights should be added on alternating sides of the TWC so that the load on the knee is as balanced as possible. Additional time and weight will further assist with knee and leg extension.  As the knee continues to improve and strengthen, additional weight can be placed inside the TWC as tolerated to provide even more assistance with knee and leg extension.

Step 5–Active Extension:  As the knee continues to strengthen and extension improves, the muscles of the leg can be actively engaged and flexed into the comfort flex pillow to achieve greater extension. This active extension should only be done gradually and as tolerated.

Active extension can be enhanced by adding weights to the weight pockets or inside the TWC.  Active extension can also be intensified by removing the comfort pillow and cinching the straps up until the top of the TWC is supporting the back of the knee and leg. This will allow for active flexing of the knee muscles to achieve greater extension.

Do not overuse Knee Extend or use too much weight.  There’s always a chance that using Knee Extend will not improve your symptoms or condition.  Consult with your doctor, healthcare provider or physical therapist about what you can expect and other treatment options.

Knee Extend should be completely removed before trying to stand or walk.
